Kathryn Artmitage

Kathryn Armitage (b. 1994, North Yorkshire; lives in London) is a figurative painter whose work probes gender norms and power dynamics through a feminist reinterpretation of art history. She holds a BA in Painting from Camberwell College of Art (2016) and recently completed an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art (2024). Drawing on personal experiences, her paintings challenge the codes dictating how women should dress, behave, and occupy space. Referencing the Old Masters - especially Dutch civic guard banquet scenes - she positions herself in place of traditionally dominant male figures, thereby reframing the narrative through a contemporary feminist lens. Armitage’s work combines historical composition with vibrant material innovation: fluorescent spray paint, gestural washes, pastel, oil stick, and untouched canvas blend into richly layered works that hover between abstraction and realism.
