Hannah Murgatroyd

Hannah Murgatroyd (b. 1976, Dartmoor/Bristol) trained at the Royal College of Art, Royal Drawing School, and Prince’s Drawing School. Her solo show Resistance is Held in the Body (Blackbird Rook, 2024) exemplified her lush, hyper-sensual painterly surfaces where flesh seems to float in liquid memory. She’s been shortlisted for prizes including the Contemporary British Painting and Waverton Art Prizes, and highly commended in 2021 for the former. Murgatroyd’s practice blurs drawing, writing, and painting into dream-logic scenes. Her figures - wanderers, seers - emerge from flickers of emotion, roots in both autobiography and art history. Her work feels like memory made visible: elusive, vivid, and suggesting narratives just beyond perception.
