Residency Reflections: Seohyun Oh

First impression of Le Moulin de Marnay and the environment
It felt like stepping into a completely different world, reminding me of my childhood visits to my grandparents’ home in rural Korea. Everything was incredibly green, quiet, and cinematic, and the cozy atmosphere immediately made me feel at peace.

How did the residency impact your creative process?
Being away from the intensity of London allowed me to rest and fully focus on my practice. During the residency, I began experimenting with natural pigments and incorporating found materials from nature, which helped me reconnect with a slower and more intuitive way of making art.

A transformative or unexpected moment during the residency
One of my favorite memories was spending time in the bamboo grove that Hiromi and I called “the zen space.” We also cooked together using herbs and plants from the garden, which felt very special and grounding compared to city life.

What did the experience teach you as an artist?
The residency taught me that stepping away from the studio and spending time in nature can be just as important as working. Rest, reflection, and distance can create new inspiration and clarity.

What was it like interacting with the other artists?
It was a beautiful experience to share ideas, conversations, and daily life with other artists. Hiromi and I already knew each other from the Royal College of Art, and we bonded even more through our shared interests in art, spirituality, and creativity.

Did you leave anything behind when the residency ended?
I think I left behind the pressure to constantly impress others or chase success. The residency helped me reconnect with my own intentions and the kind of art I truly want to make.

Anything else you would like to share?
I’m deeply grateful to Melanie, Hiromi, and Atticas for creating such a warm and inspiring environment. The small everyday moments — walking Chousette, cooking together, and sharing conversations — became some of the most meaningful memories of the residency.
