Monica McKenna has worked in photography for more than thirty years, developing a practice rooted in a continual exploration of the boundary between photography and painting. Her work has evolved toward increasingly experimental approaches that challenge the photographic image as a literal record of reality. In her recent exhibition, LIMINAL in 2020, she used long exposures and movement to create ethereal, painterly images in which landscape and form become fluid and elusive. Her current practice utilises the ancient medium of encaustic. She works directly onto her photographs with pigment before layering beeswax and damar resin, using heat and physical manipulation to fuse and transform the image. McKenna’s work is concerned with atmosphere, transformation and the shifting space between recognition and abstraction.
