Sabine Pigalle

Sabine Pigalle addresses the history of portraiture and the female nude in her magical, manipulated photographs referencing classical mythology and religious icons. Her subjects, bathed in painterly light, adopt poses that self-consciously mimic iconic works. Her “Nightwatch” (2014) series features photographs of nymph-like nudes in an enhanced, dark forest setting, as though lit by the moon, while her series “Timequakes” (2011–4) reimagines Renaissance- and Flemish-style portraits against a modern background of blurred neon lights.
